January Book Corner
Dance it out, stand in the sun, be your own person.
Yes. That is exactly what Shonda taught me. After reading her incredible book "Year of Yes" I've collected a few tips on how to dance it out, stand in the sun and be my own person.
If you don't know who Shonda Rhimes is, she is the writer and executive producer of the entire TGIT on ABC. The whole night. Greys Anatomy, Scandal, and How to get away with Murder. Home girl is taking over!
With Shonda being such an incredible writer for some of my absolute favorite shows I expected nothing less from her first book.
Year of Yes goes into a year of Shonda saying yes to things that scare her and things that challenge her.
As an introvert, much like myself, she typically would retreat to her safe place verses accept speaking engagements, award ceremonies, and even panels with the stars of her shows.
During this year of saying yes she learned how to live life to the fullest by stepping out of the box.
She shares her untraditional Dartmouth Commencement speech and the journey of making tv "normal" by including the LBGT community and strong roles for African American women.
She notes yes to accepting any and all acknowledgements of personal fabulous awesomeness with a clear calm thank you [ie badassery] instead of not believing it.
I'm going to be totally honest with you, I completely deserve this... - Shonda Rhimes
She said yes to saying no when you need to is one of the most powerful things you can do.
She goes into defining happiness as coming from being who you actually are instead of who you think you are supposed to be and examines how to find your happy place.
But most importantly she mentions how her year of yes went from twelve months to forever!
I could go on but there were so many great take away points in this book and I want you to discover them for yourself. I laughed, I received affirmations, and I was even gently reminded by the last words from Christina Yang of Grey's Anatomy that I am the sun and I shouldn't compromise what I need.
As the book came to a close I realized how many gems I had noted and have deemed Year of Yes my favorite nonfiction book.
I dare you to go pick it up and try it for yourself! Find it HERE!
As for me, I'll be over here dancing it out in the sun because I'm my own person. I'm saying yes to life. Yes to letting go. Yes to forgiving. Yes to Vanessa.
