GIRL. Last week was brutal.
Between attempting to balance the craziness of my workload at the lab, working at the studio, and attempting to have a social life it left me literally crashing by Thursday.
Truth is I'm not superwoman. It sucks because deep down sometimes I feel as if I am.
My body lets me know if I'm getting stressed and putting too much on myself and I have to work through it.
Here are 5 ways I deal with my stress in all aspects of my life:
1. Pause and Breathe
Yes. Breathe. Something that some may consider to be so minuscule but I promise you it's everything.
The moment I feel overwhelmed or start experiencing symptoms of being over stressed I force myself to pause.
Be it me slipping away into the restroom or stepping outside to go for a quick walk and get some air.
In the midst of having 10,000 things on your to do list and feeling like you can't possibly take a break, if you just make yourself take a moment to regroup it will make all the difference in the world and force you not to blow up because, if you don't, it's bound to happen.
One of my favorite breathing exercises is to breathe in slowly for 3 counts, hold for 3, and then exhale slowly for another 3. Feel the ground beneath your feet supporting you. You've got this!
Next, you have to make priorities. There's no such thing at giving everything on your plate 100%. You can either give each equal parts or pour your focus and energy into one task at a time.
Figure out what's important. What needs to be done first? Start there and take it a task at a time.
3. Make a plan
Planning goes hand and hand in prioritizing. Once you have your priorities set, make a plan.
I live by lists. At work, at home, grocery shopping, you name it. Being able to cross things off makes me feel like I've accomplished something.
Make a list of no more than 5 major tasks and tackle those first. Small bites are more manageable than an entire buffet, and way less intimidating :)
4. Don't give a f*ck
Next, don't give a f*ck. No really. When Friday came I was literally like eff it. I'll get what I can done (based off of my priorities and plan) and I worked exactly 8hrs and left!
I grabbed tools from one of my favorite books "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck" which included finding out what matters and the fact that we are always choosing. In my case, I have the chance to make a decision for how I deal with the stress I'm under.
The moment I began to speak over myself that I've got this and will do what I can there was literally a shift. Friday I was so happy and carefree. Simply by not giving a f*ck about what doesn't matter and focusing on what does.
5. Self care
In the midst of it all, it is important to practice self care. I cannot push this enough. Be good to your body and it will be good to you.
Stress often leads many to take on bad habits such as turning to alcohol. I used to be guilty of this but I literally have to force myself to not run and have a drink every time I've had a stressful or rough day, because epigenetics.
So now for me, self care looks like going to get a pedicure, hopping onto my yoga mat, reading a good novel, watching a movie, pulling myself together and going to dinner and laughing with a good friend, and the list goes on. #JustBecauseItsTuesday
How do you deal with stress?
Be awesomely amazing,
