What Going Natural Has Taught Me
Going natural started out as a method to grow my hair out but who knew that it would mean so much more.
I had been rocking a short relaxed pixie cut for about 5 years and wanted a change. I wanted to grow it out but every time I hit that awkward stage I just couldn't take it so I chopped.
I tried protective styling and on February 14, 2014 when my best friend and I were taking my braids out I looked in the mirror at my growth and crinkles and thought hmm maybe I could give the whole natural thing a go again and get it right the second time around.
See the first time I tried to go natural was back in 2010 and I wasn't aware of the styling resources out there so I inevitably got peer pressured by my mother to relax after 2 months into my journey.
So I stuck it out and here I am 2 years later, still figuring it out but I'm doing it.
My journey has taught me self confidence and perseverance. I let go of my fears of what my employer would think, what my family thinks, what anyone thinks because it's my hair! I feel beautiful and although it sometimes frustrates me and has a mind of it's own, it makes me..me. I look forward to continuing to share my journey with those who will listen. I don't have it all figured out but I'm constantly improving the longer I stay in this thang.
